9:57 pm More DOMESTIC TERRORISM. how is this NOT huge national news?????
Has this been on a news blackout? How is it that no-one has heard of this until now??

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. This, apparently, is what the scare tactic political campaigning of John McCain's supporters has led to -- Americans perpetrating a terrorist attack against innocent children on American soil.

to repeat: Muslim Children Gassed at Dayton Mosque After "Obsession" DVD Hits Ohio

Please, please, go to this link and read the whole thing. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/28/203016/697/536/613742

It was reported in the Dayton Daily News, but not commented on in major media since. The DVDs ---28 million of them--- were inserted in newspapers in many swing states by a pro-McCain group. And so here we are. A country where hatred is distributed with the Sunday paper. Where children are maliciously attacked because of their religion and no one blinks. Thankfully, no-one died. This time.

I urge you to call or write any major media outlet you know of and disseminate this story. Also, I'm sure the people in Dayton Islamic Society and their members would appreciate a kind word.

Ugh, I wish I were more surprised. I've been glued to the news this weekend, and haven't heard a word about this. Thanks for posting.

I'm a little confused. Is the claim that the person or persons who committed the act of terrorism on the mosque did so directly because of the "Obsession" DVD?

Or is the idea simply that these events happened in close proximity of time to one another?

Those are two very extreme maximalizing options. There is plenty of middle ground between them where the DVD was a contributing factor - in a climate where dehumanization of Muslims is condoned and even encouraged by all facets of media, culture, public figures, etc - but not the sole contributing factor. Setting it up as a false dichotomy where one pole is so obviously incorrect (the DVD was the sole factor) in order to lead people to the other pole (the DVD had nothing to do with it and it was just coincidence) is disingenuous and, frankly, gross.

That's not what I was trying to do. I'm just trying to get clear what exactly is known and what isn't.

The attack happened at the end of the week the DVD was distributed, and the people interviewed in the Dayton news article said this was not something they could have imagined happening. So I think the assumption is that the attackers were probably inspired by the film, though there's no way of knowing until/unless they're caught.

WTH? Are you REALLY trying that argument? In this freaking climate?

you think this was a coincidence?

you're seriously confused because these events just happened to be in close proximity to each other?
um. ok, I'll explain slowly.

Clarion Fund, who distributed 28 million free bigoted DVDs is a backer of McCain. This is like a 527. Just what do you think is the political purpose of the mass distibution of Obsession, in Ohio, in September of 2008? It was to rile up the recipients into hate/fear/bigotry. Hate speech that inspires violence is not protected speech.

And if you think the events are unrelated? You probably think there was no correlation to listening to rightwing radio demonizing liberals and the recent shootings of the UU church and the Democratic chair of Arkansas. Or to painting the Star of David on front doors and wearing a brown shirt.

Re: you think this was a coincidence?

You're right, I set it up as a dichotomy and I shouldn't have. My comment was dismissive and minimizing, and that was wrong of me. I apologize.

I've seen this DVD before - not watched it, but my father was mailed a copy earlier this year because he works for the Naval WAr College and has colleagues who were involved in this thing's production. I remember when we got it in the mail he threw it out without bothering to look at it, and I'm going to e-mail him tonight to ask him what he knows about its production etc.

That's the reason I asked about whether or not there's any known explicit connection between the DVD release and the acts of terrorism, because I know my father will refuse to believe anything I say if I bring this stuff up in an e-mail and I can't cite sources and shit.

Correlation does not necessarily imply causation but it's certainly cause to consider the possibility! The distribution of those DVDs with newspapers is a huge concern because it lends an air of legitimacy to the propaganda. It certainly creates an environment in which hate crimes are more likely.

This is horrifying. I agree that it's no coincidence.

Reposting this. Dugg the article and this one mentioning the DVD at the Dayton Daily News.

Here's the media contact for CNN (from the Kos comments.)

Note they got a good white Christian boy to say the DVD was inflammatory. Because no one would believe an Arab Muslim who said the same. *smh*

I didn't make that connection on my first reading but you're absolutely right. And unfortunately it's true that it would make less of an impact on a privileged readership to see a quote to the same effect from a Muslim leader.

thank you all for linking--- I think part of the media blackout is that so many newspapers *know* they were complicit in the distribution of this filth. This story *has* to get out
